Enrollment is currently open for Pitt in Israel summer 2019 program! The cost is $6,200 for in-state students and $6,400 for out-of-state students. The first ten students to apply are guaranteed a $2,000 scholarship.
Pitt in Israel is an exciting opportunity for students to engage with ideas of multiculturalism, identity, and religion. Israel is a place steeped in history and rich with cultural diversity - Jews, Muslims, and Christians from around the globe live together in a land holy to millions. Throughout the nearly month-long program, students will gain a deeper understanding of how personal and national narratives correspond with each other.
During the first half of the program, taught by Ben Gordon (assistant department professor in the department of Religious Studies), students live in Jerusalem; they will learn about the history and politics of the city, from antiquity to modern day. Most days will be spent touring archaeological sites or museums in Jerusalem. The second half of the program will be based in the center of Tel Aviv, where students will read modern Israeli and Palestinian literature, all while living a short walk from the Mediterranean Sea. This part of the program will be taught by Kevin Haworth, an accomplished author who joins us from Carnegie Mellon University. Throughout the program there will be beginners-level language lessons in Hebrew and Arabic.
